Shomari Figures
For Congressman Shomari Figures, Alabama is home. It’s where his story began, growing up in his grandfather’s church and receiving his education from kindergarten through law school. Deeply rooted in his community, Shomari has dedicated his life to service and advocating for the people of his state.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Justice
Shomari’s parents inspired his passion for public service. His father, Michael Figures, was a state senator and lawyer who spent over two decades expanding rights for Black people in Mobile and across Black Belt Alabama. Michael fought to protect property rights, ensure fair representation, and famously led the lawsuit that bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan after the lynching of a Black teenager in Mobile in 1981.
His mother, Vivian Figures, served on the Mobile City Council and is currently a State Senator. She has worked tirelessly to protect women’s rights and improve health and education in Alabama. Through their example, Shomari learned the importance of standing up for justice and equality.
From Alabama to the White House and Back
Shomari attended John L. LeFlore High School before earning his undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Alabama. After law school, he served as a federal court clerk and joined President Barack Obama’s campaign, which led to a role in the White House as the Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel. There, he worked with senior leaders across federal departments and supported the rollout of policies like the Affordable Care Act, helping improve the lives of countless Alabamians.
He continued his public service as White House Liaison at the Department of Justice under Attorney General Loretta Lynch, advising on civil rights, immigration, child welfare, and policing. Shomari also served as Counsel in Congress and later joined the Biden-Harris Transition Team. Most recently, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Representing Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District
Now, as Congressman for Alabama’s newly formed 2nd Congressional District, Shomari is focused on using his experience to improve the quality of life for the people he serves. His work centers on ensuring access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities while addressing the challenges that affect his community.
