Born from an African American father and Puerto Rican mother in a working-class family in Syracuse, NY, she is confronted with issues with identity, conflicting standards of beauty from family members and her community, layered with feelings of inferiority as a Harvard bound Afro Latina young woman who did not have the academic pedigree of her white peers.
